My thought is that they’d have a 2 threshold check, a relatively easy one to locate the “direction” of the attacker, and then another at +20 the DC to pinpoint the exact square.

The other concern would be when the person in illumination can or can’t “react to the blow” for the purposes of things like sneak attack or the bonuses / penalties for attacking such a target.

Do they get their Dex to AC back when they’ve realized the direction of the threat, pin-pointed the square of their attacker, or not at all until their attacker is in an area where they can be seen?

I just wanted to point out that there are 2 more numbers where it would affect things, which is for the Crit fail set.

Pretty much agree with you across the board. I am so sad that after the failure of Resonance in the PF2 playtest, they didn’t go with Stamina as the limited-healing system of choice.

The one thing I disagree on is the asymmetric Math. PF2 solved this in a different way: by making the really-bad mind control stuff only on a crit-failed save. But because Hacking seems to be a notable feature in Starfinder, it’s fun to have temporary control over that amazing To hit modifier, and I do think that the most dangerous thing a spellcaster could do was cast some kind of Charm effect indicated these spells either needed to be nerfed or designed around.

I do admit that players don’t like it when they’re doing +4 to hit while monsters wield +7, but they tend to understand after explaining the reasons. Not the most elegant solution, but I do like the result.

I never play melee, though. I’ve played casters, healers, ranged, support, you name it, for decades. I never liked melee. In PF2, melee feels great. Casters do not feel great. They feel many shades away from great. An old healer/buffer character converted to PF2 feels good when casting Heal (because Heal is awesome now) but absolutely lame the rest of the time.

It’s been this weird thing and I think that the action economy system simply doesn’t work with magic is a big part of the reason why. My melee characters have all sorts of things they can do in all sorts of combinations. Casters have… well, a move and a standard, effectively, matching PF1. It’s a real let down.

Spells also fall off in power quickly when you get enemies higher level than you (which the APs love to ues) because as you mentioned, the math is so tight they are usually making saves and the effects are minimal unless you can get them to fail.

It’s been kind of a letdown on that front, but man do I really enjoy my Goblin Rogue in it.

Have you looked at Ranger before? If you need an idea, “How many archetypes is too many?” would be a fun clickbait.

Shapeshifter/Wild Hunter/Skirmisher/Wilderness Medic works surprisingly well together, I am using it as one of my favorite Vital Strike builds right now. The archetypes mesh surprisingly well, lol. Imagine Lizard Shaman from Goblin Slayer, minus the skeletons.

The emulator worked like a charm, and once I also DLed Adobe into it, I was able to export a character as pdf, email it to myself, open it, cut & paste to wordpad then to word to make double-collumn listings of NPCs for games (and eventually for published adventures).

Only a small amount of post-paste formatting was required on my first test characters. A great tool, time-saving and effective.

Of course, this avoids the issue that every Paizo adventure published to date features really tough adversaries hitting well above the PCs’ level. Are they just having teething issues regarding adventure design?

Gold management.

Why couldn’t they decide to have a system using only one type of coins instead of this hellish gold/silver/copper system, where each adventure earns you a few gp, then makes you earn 12 silvers on you dayjob and spend 20 copper on a mundane item and somehow expect players to keep track of all that.

Madness.

Mechanically it is the same, but it actually shows players how bad it is. Lol
